2010 Out of a field of 18000 runners, Stephen Muzhingi from Zimbabwe won his second Comrades Marathon over the weekend. These achievements however, are being somewhat eclipsed this week by the imminent start of Africa's greatest sporting event. The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Friday 11 June at Soccer City, Soweto, Johannesburg. For a month, the eyes of the soccer / football fraternity across the globe will be on South Africa as 32 teams meet in 10 stadiums across South Africa to decide the top soccer team in the 2010 World Cup. There is a perception in some quarters that accommodation and airline seats are fully booked for the duration of the games, but this is certainly not the case. www.kulula.com and 1Time.co.za airlines have both this past week been promoting one way tickets between South African cities for days over the next month or so for as little as R299 to R329 one way. A Whale of a Time at the
popular seaside town of Fish Hoek offers 4 star accommodation and also

Well-known opera star, Zanne Stapelberg, celeb chef Francois Ferreira and Tammy-Ann Fortuin, will do the honours this year by welcoming each wine producer and receiving their new Shiraz wines". The closest accommodation on this website to the Paarl Shiraz Festival would be La Verdure on a farm near Franschhoek and Aan-den-Weg outside Stellenbosch. Paarl is also easily accessible from Cape Town, so a day trip to the festival is quite feasible from any of our Cape Town accommodation establishments with Fairhaven Guest Accommodation in Durbanville being the nearest to Paarl.

The Lion King is now showing at The Montecasino Teatro until 9 September. The accommodation closest to Montecasino on this website is at Inyoni Cottages in Sandton. 2007 Some visitors to South Africa use these good transport links to leave Johannesburg without spending any time there and that is a pity, for in many ways, this is the "greatest city" in Southern Africa and it has a lot to offer. Apart from the largest selection of shopping malls, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and accommodation, Johannesburg also boasts a number of attractions that are worth visiting and experiencing. Some of the highlights worth visiting during a
stay in Johannesburg could include: For further details about what to see, what to do and where to eat out, please contact the friendly and helpful hosts at The Cottage and Afton Guest House in Kempton Park (both establishments are conveniently located near to the international airport) or at Inyoni in Sandton, an upmarket city area within Greater Johanneburg - with all the amenities that one would expect from a world class city

2007 South Africa's premier book fair, The Cape Town Book Fair opens its doors to the public from 16 to 19 June 2007 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. More than 300 events will be open to the public including readings, book launches, panel discussions and seminars. In the Eastern Cape, The National Arts Festival takes place in Grahamstown from 28 June to 7 July 2007. Since 1974, this has grown into the biggest celebration of the arts in Africa. If you are interested in drama, dance, opera, music, visual art, films, lectures craft art, student theatre, jazz, street theatre and a children's arts festival, then this is the place to visit. Add to this, craft and book fairs, workshops and demonstrations, tours of the city and surrounding areas and you have a great excuse to visit the Eastern Cape. To find the festival in Grahamstown - that's easy - for the whole of the small City of Grahamstown effectively becomes the National Arts Festival during this period. The availability of accommodation can be a major problem, so if you cannot find any availability at A Stone's Throw B&B or any where else in Grahamstown, you may need to look further afield. In Port Elizabeth, some 130 kilometres distant, try Margate Place Guest House in the beach suburb of Summerstrand. Slightly further away, you will find popular Kilkerran Guest House in the tranquil green suburb of Bonnie Doone in East London. The famous Comrades Marathon is going "down" this year from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday 17 June. If you are not yet registered, it is too late to do so, but this is also a great spectacle as thousands of runners cover the huge 89 kilometres to the finish at Kingsmead Stadium. In Johannesburg, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre is exhibiting the Science Tunnel which is open to visitors (and school groups) from 19 May - 29 July 2007. This new Science Centre is the largest in Africa and its exhibits and activities focus on mathematics, science and technology and are aimed at learners, educators, families, companies, and tourists. It is claimed to be one of the best facilities of its kind in the world (for more details see the website). One of the current programmes with further details on their website is: " The Max Planck Science Tunnel (from Germany) that presents the best of scientific breakthroughs… such as complex computer simulations and the most powerful microscopes. Experience how galaxies merge, black holes bring stars off course, and gigantic sun storms rage…hear about the latest satellite missions. Walk through the cells of the human body and the world of our senses".The Sci-Bono Discovery
Centre is in Newtown, to the west of the Johannesburg CBD (a map
of how to get there can be found on their website). Attractions Open in

2007 Rainy days are not usually too intrusive, but can be fairly evenly spread between winter and summer. This combination of sun and rain has nurtured some of South Africa’s best indigenous forests. These can be found towards the mountains, between George and Storm’s River. There are a number of places where these forests and their birdlife can be appreciated. You may be lucky enough to spot a Knysna Loerie. The owners of the accommodation establishments in the area will be able to tell you how to get to some of these beauty spots and places to view one of the big trees. When you have finished with the forests, there are mile upon mile of magnificent beaches to visit as well as hundreds of other activities, adventure sports, attractions and entertainment option to experience. We don’t recommend a night in The Garden Route. Rather, we recommend two or three nights or if possible, a week or longer which will give you the time to unwind and relax. To help you unwind and relax in The Garden Route, we are proud to represent three accommodation establishments in centrally situated George. Our most recent addition, Avocet House offers a combination of self-catering and bed & breakfast accommodation. Erica B&B has been a popular bed and breakfast / self-catering establishment for a number of years and Argyle House offering bed & breakfast accommodation, has the added attraction of a pub area and a swimming pool. In The Wilderness, Wilderness Views does indeed have tremendous views and Brenton Blue B&B at Kenton-on-Sea near Knysna also has sea views and is walking distance to the beach (if you don’t mind a bit of an uphill walk afterwards). Croft House is a well-established B&B with self-catering facilities on the edge of Knysna and only a minute or so from famous Knysna Lagoon. Bird life is encouraged to this garden setting and you may even see your Knysna Loerie here. Summer is a good time to visit the Garden Route, but then so is autumn, winter and spring. In fact, the winter months can be some of the best days weather wise and if you are seeking a little peace and tranquillity you can’t go far wrong with this quieter time of the year Winter is a quieter period unless it is the June /
July school holidays or ... unless you get there over the period of the
increasingly popular
Knysna Oyster
Festival Part of the festival includes the well-supported "Pick `n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour" on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July and the "Pick `n Pay Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon" on Saturday 14 July 2007. It is recommended that you book your accommodation in advance during the period of the festival and especially over the two weekends.

2007 If you are a jazz lover and visiting Cape Town, then you won't want to miss The Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Going into its 8th year, this popular event is firmly anchored in the annual Cape Town calendar of big events. It is happening on 30 and 31 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. For more details of the event and the South African and international artists, visit the festival website at www.capetownjazzfest.com It is just a few days away to the legendary annual Two Oceans Marathon. This route surely forms one of the most scenic marathon courses anywhere. The big day is on Saturday 7 April, during the busy Easter Weekend. If you have not yet made your accommodation reservation in Cape Town over Easter in may be advisable to do so as soon as possible. In Durban, there is always something showing at The Playhouse. If you book today, you may just be able to see one of the final performances of Hamlet. For details about this and future shows, visit www.playhousecompany.com and click on the What's On link. In Johannesburg, there are a number of craft and flea markets that may be worth a visit. One of them, the Panorama Flea Market has its own website at www.panoramafleamarket.com and is open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. One of the most popular attractions in Johannesburg is Gold Reef City and for information about the "Jozi's Story of Gold" experience, visit their website at www.goldreefcity.co.za and click on "Promotions"

Kadie Cottage is just around the corner from the tourist heart of Swellendam. Although Swellendam is a town, it has a village feel about it. Kadie Cottage is well positioned for a short walk to The Drostdy and other attractions of this, the third oldest town in South Africa. It is also an ideal stopover for a journey to The Garden Route and beyond. Kadie Cottage and Swellendam also form an ideal base for exploring the Overberg. One scenic circuit journey worth mentioning is to take the Tradouw Pass to Barrydale and then take route 62 to historic Montagu, before returning to Swellendam via Cogman’s Kloof and the outskirts of Ashton. Another journey worth undertaking, is that to Cape Aghulas, the most southerly tip of Africa. We suggest that you include a visit to picturesque seaside Arniston as a part of this journey. One could allow 2 fairly leisurely days for these excursions from Swellendam. Saxe-Coburg Lodge in Prince Albert is a fair distance from Cape Town, but enthusiastic travellers have been known to get there after work in the city. If you have time, why not make a day of driving there, as there is much to see and do en-route, such as a visit historic Matjiesfontein. See one of the world's largest telescopes at Sutherland (plan for quite a lengthy detour for this) and possibly tour around a game reserve such as Aquila near Touws River. Saxe-Coburg Lodge , slightly set back on the main road in Prince Albert, is walking distance to restaurants and yet has a quiet country feel about it, with its large attractive back garden with views of the mountains. Some of the accommodation is located on this garden side at Saxe-Coburg. Over the years, Prince Albert has become increasingly popular with visitors - many of whom, on their journey to or from the interior, make the detour of 45 kilometres off the N1. Prince Albert is particularly well positioned at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. From here, the spectacular Swartberg Pass climbs to quite an altitude to reach Oudtshoorn on the other side. Please note that this is a gravel road with impressive drops in places and may not suit all drivers. In Oudtshoorn, another guesthouse Country Estate Guest House offers accommodation on a bed & breakfast basis. The other alternative to the Swartberg Pass is the beautifully constructed Meirings Poort road, which instead of going over the mountain range, actually follows a river that has cut its way right through the mountains, creating spectacular vertical cliffs that soar up hundreds of metres on either side. This road is tarred throughout. Closer to Cape Town, Barford Haven and 32 Musson Street Cottages in Hermanus are within walking distance of the town centre and the seafront (beaches are a little further away). Barford Haven is closer to the sea and town centre and offers accommodation on a self-catering basis, whilst 32 Musson Street Cottages has a choice of self-catering or bed & breakfast accommodation. Hermanus is one of the most popular seaside towns in the Western Cape. It has a very especial setting between mountain and sea. Hermanus is also well known as one of the best land based viewing areas for whale watching. Why not take a trip and find out for yourself just what makes Hermanus so popular? If you have time, try the scenic coastal route between Cape Town and Hermanus that includes the smaller seaside towns of Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay.

If you answer yes to any of the above, then you will probably be delighted to know that we have just added a wine and rose farm outside Stellenbosch to our selection of places in a farm setting. Aan-den-Weg offers a choice of a honeymoon suite or a two bedroomed family unit. This farm, offering bed & breakfast has just been awarded 3 stars by The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. Surrounded by rose plantations, vineyards and breathtaking views (including views of the Stellenbosch mountains), Aan-den-Weg is a paradise for nature lovers. It is also the ideal base for families and wine enthusiasts to explore the Cape Peninsula and Cape Winelands. The town of Stellenbosch with its beautiful setting and historic architecture is probably the most visited of the towns in the Winelands and is only 10 kilometres away. For other places to stay on a farm in the Western Cape, we offer self-catering accommodation at La Verdure Cottages near Franschhoek and outside Worcester, at Summer Hill Guest Farm, where there is a choice of bed & breakfast or self-catering accommodation. It is easy to get to both of these farms after work on a Friday (especially during the long summer evenings), but it is best to book in advance as both establishments are becoming increasingly popular, especially over weekends. Franschhoek is regarded by many as the culinary capital of South Africa, but whether you agree fully with this assertion or not, what you should find most appealing is the setting of Franschhoek at the head of a beautiful valley, surrounded on three sides by high mountains and bordered by farms producing wine and fruit of the highest standards. Summer Hill Guest Farm offers a long list of things to do around Worcester (follow the links to their page), so if you do not want to simply sit by the pool and unwind on the farm, you could visit a game farm only 2 kilomtres away, go boating, fishing or canoeing or visit an open-air farm museum or do any of the other 20 or so sights and activities. Go for a night, but be warned, you may decide to stay for a week!
