Masque premieres hit play - “August: Osage County

Tracy Letts’ acclaimed dark comedy “August: Osage County opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 28 October.  Director birga Thomas saw this explosive play on Broadway and was so impressed that she applied for and got the South African rights.  The MADS production is the South African premiere of this worldwide hit, which has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for the best Drama 2008.

Wendy Goddard, Lynwen Roman, Michele Belknap and Jana Botha in August: Osage County
opening at the Masque Theatre on Friday 28 October

Set on the hot plains of the southern United States, the Weston family re-union becomes a melting-pot of insults and betrayal.  The August heat is matched by the emotional temperature of the family interactions.

Critics have compared this rollercoaster of a play to the works of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee.  It has toured the United States and been produced in Europe, Australia and Argentina to rave reviews.

The director and several of the cast members have won awards in the past.  The play has a very strong cast, and also introduces some new actors to the Masque Theatre stage.

“August: Osage County” by Tracy Letts depicts one bitch of a family re-union at which you’ll recoil in shock, cry and laugh.  Whatever your re-action, the play will not be forgotten. (Not recommended for children).

Because of the length of the play, performances are restricted to one per day, with varying stating times, and an additional Wednesday evening show.

Friday 28 at 19h30, Saturday 29 at 19h30,
Sunday 30 October at 15h00,
Wednesday 02 at 19h30,
Thursday 03 at 19h30, Friday 04 at 19h30
and Saturday 05 November at 14h30.

WICKEDLY FUNNY COWARD COMEDY at the Masque

Welcome back Noel Coward to the Masque Theatre Muizenberg; his deliciously wicked comedy of ill-manners, “Hay Fever” opens on Friday 07 October.

Wayne Ronne, Bernadine Jacobs and Kelly Kowalski  in "Hay Fever" opening at the Masque Theatre
on Friday 07 October

The Bliss family is headed by the outrageously theatrical ex-actress, Judith.  Each member of this self-absorbed family of four has independently invited a guest for the weekend.  Unfortunately for the guests, they are thoroughly bemused by their hosts’ casual ill-manners.

In typical Coward fashion, a sly dig is taken at upper-class English society in the 1920s.  Coward himself said that  “ Hay Fever” is considered by many to be his best comedy – clever, very funny and an assured crowd-pleaser.

“Hay Fever” is directed by Alastair Duff for the Fish Hoek Dramatic Society.
The run is from Friday 07 to Saturday 15 October (excluding Sunday to Wednesday). Weeknights are at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm.
Tickets are R50 for Thursday evening and Saturday matinees and R60 for the Friday and Saturday evenings.(Masque Theatre Club Members enjoy a R10 discount).

Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” at the Masque

William Shakespeare’s text has the extraordinary ability to travel through time and space and retain its relevance. The issues it deals with are every bit as real in the 21st century as they were in the 11th.. Tyranny and fascism still raise their heads in varying forms in our modern world.

Domestic Drama at the Masque
In the 1950s when
“Come back little Sheba” was written, a child conceived out of wedlock was a disgrace. A “shot-gun marriage” was seen to be the solution to this dilemma. William Inge's play was a daring break-through for the time. It deals honestly with failed hopes and lost dreams.

Wayne Ronne and Tarryn Sessions in "Come back little Sheba"
opening at the Masque Theatre on Friday 1 April 2011

“Come back little Sheba” has all the necessary ingredients for a realistic domestic drama: an alcoholic husband and a frumpish wife who adores yet fears him. Into this potentially explosive situation comes a pretty young student as a boarder. To them, she becomes the representation of the daughter they never had.

William Inge's “Come back little Sheba” is directed by Barrie Howard for the Constantiaberg Theatre Players. It opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 01 April and runs until Saturday 09 April, excluding Sunday to Wednesday.

Week nights are at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm.
Tickets are R50 for Thursday night and Saturday matinees and R60 for Friday and Saturday nights (Masque Theatre Club members enjoy a R10 discount).

Arthur Miller Classic at the Masque.
Throughout the ages authoritarian leaders have demonised their opposition in order to retain power. The McCarthy hearings in the 50s is one example and even today this continues to happen in Africa.

Arthur Miller's The Crucible tells the horrifying story of a group of religious bigots in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, who also demonised their opponents by using the villagers' fear of the Devil and damnation to achieve their own ends.

Tamara Richards, Dean Howarth, Jonathan Duguid and Zakie Johnson in The Crucible
opening at the Masque Theatre on Friday 4 March

Living on a new continent, this small Puritan community relied for its unity and survival on narrow religious authority and repression. Abigail Williams (Angela Lee-Wright) a classic case of “hell has no fury like a woman scorned” resorts to devil worship to “get her man”, John Proctor (Dean Howarth). When rejected she turns to false accusations of witchcraft, with the devastating effects of mass hysteria, resultant violence and hatred. With all hell breaking loose, the unscrupulous villagers take advantage of the ensuing mayhem to settle old scores. Within a few weeks, dozens of innocent people are in jail on charges of witchcraft.

The Crucible has become Miller's most frequently produced play and a classic of the 20th Century. It offers wonderful acting opportunities to a very large cast.

It opens on Friday 04 and runs until Saturday 12 March (excluding Sunday to Wednesday). Week nights are at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 7pm (Please note later evening show on Saturdays).
Tickets are R60 for evening performances and matinees are R50 (Masque Theatre Club members enjoy a R10 discount).

The setting is turn-of-the-century Paris with tea at the Reservoirs of Versailles, dinner at Maxims, Can-can and souffle accompanied by an excellent Verve Cliquot and even weekends away at Trouville.

Clifford Graham directs Luella Holland, Michele Belknap, Trevor Joubert and Sheila Inglis, to name but a few, in this beautiful and poignant coming-of-age story. Musical direction is by Justin Wardle and Choreography by Kim Harris.

Roger and Kay thoroughly enjoyed the show and beyond a few opening night nerves, found "Gigi" to be colourful and entertaining.  With some good singing and acting, well-timed humour, effective scenery and clever use of a fairly small stage, "Gigi" was for us, a memorable night at the theatre.

Performances dates are Friday 3, Saturday 4, Wednesday 8 to Sunday 12, Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 December.
Week nights are at 8pm, Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm, Sunday 12 at 3pm and Wednesday 16 at 2.30 and 8pm.

Popular thriller at the Masque
“Deathtrap” by Ira Levin was one of the biggest hits in the history of Broadway. Aubrey Hindle directs Levin's gripping thriller for the Fish Hoek Dramatic Society. The play opens on Friday 12 November 2010 at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg.

Rudy Gibbons, Belinda Batt and Alastair Duff in "Deathtrap" - opens at the Masque on 12 November

Levin's play “Deathtrap” is actually about a play called “Deathtrap”, written by the character Clifford Anderson, played by Rudy Gibbons.

Sidney Bruhl (Alastair Duff), a once successful playwright who has not had a hit for 14 years, has received in the post, a copy of the manuscript of a brilliant new play written by Anderson. Bruhl is obsessed with a longing to be the author of Anderson's play (But how far will someone go to have a hit play?) He invites the young man to visit him.........

Other characters include Bruhl's wife (Lynsey Milewski) a lawyer (Jeff Batt) and a Dutch psychic (Belinda Batt) – all of whom have their own agendas and hidden motives.

Murder, treachery and suspense are the ingredients in this intriguing play which twists and turns without let-up.

“Deathtrap” runs from Friday 12 to Saturday 20 November (excluding Sunday to Wednesday).
Weeknights at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm.

Neil Simon's comedy at Masque Theatre
Opening on Friday 22 October at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, is Constantiaberg Theatre Players' presentation of Neil Simon's “God Favorite”

Director Celia Musikanth has enjoyed an on-going love affair with Neil Simon's comedies about dysfunctional families for years. In fact, this is her fifth Simon production.

Pam Burger, Cheri-Lee Blackie, Wayne Ronne and Gavin Werner in "God's Favorite"

One of America's favourite playwrights, Neil Simon, has been relieving audience of their anxieties, fears and worries by making them laugh at the own foibles for over forty years. His portrayals of individual angst and dysfunctional family relationships manage to hit a nerve every time. Simon takes the audience through laughter to tears and back, as he explores life's emotional truths. A prolific writer, he has written and had produced more Broadway hits than any other American playwright.

Successful Jewish businessman Joe Benjamin is a modern-day “Job” with a high-maintenance wife, indulged children and wise-cracking household help. Just when it seems things couldn't get any worse, he is visited by Sidney Lipton aka The Messenger from God (and a compulsive film buff) with a mission; test Joe's faith and report back to “the Boss”. The jokes and Tests of Faith fly fast and furious as Simon spins a contemporary morality take like no other in this hilarious comedy.

“God's Favorite” by Neil Simon runs from Friday 22 October to Saturday 30 October (excluding Monday to Wednesday)  Please note a special performance on Sunday 24 October at 3pm.
Weekdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm.
Tickets are R60 (Masque Theatre Club Members R50) for Friday and Saturday evening and R50(R40) for Thursday evening and matinees.

What the Butler Saw.
The Masque Theatre goes out on a limb with this one, and the theatre-goers who prefer spicy to bland should find Joe Orton's 'What the butler saw' a tasty dish.

Kelly Kowalsi, Carin Bester, Andre Thomas, Alan Jacobs, James Skilton and Gavin Gomes in
"What the Butler Saw"

This wickedly funny farce is directed by Ralph Yarrow, former head of drama at the University of East Anglia in the UK. Yarrow has directed, acted and given workshops in the UK, India and South Africa and his repertoire ranges from Shakespeare, Goethe and Mdiere, to Beckett and Pinter.

Muizenberg Dramatic Society (MADS) is fortunate in having this esteemed director sharing his years of experience with his cast.

This fast-and-furious farce is set in a mental home about to be subjected to a government inspection and a police inquiry into missing parts of a statue of Winston Churchill. Cover-ups, revelations, cross-dressings and pursuits succeed one another at breakneck speed. The very young and the very old might find some of this difficult.

'What the Butler Saw' by Joe Orton
opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 01 October and runs until Saturday 09 October, excluding Sunday to Wednesday.
Weekdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 2:30 and 6:30pm.
Tickets are R60 (Masque Theatre club members R50).
To book phone: 021 788 1898 (9am till 4pm weekdays, and 8:30 till 11:30am on Saturdays.)
