WICKEDLY FUNNY COWARD
COMEDY at the Masque
Welcome back Noel Coward to the Masque
Theatre Muizenberg; his deliciously wicked comedy of ill-manners, “Hay
Fever” opens on Friday 07 October.
The Bliss family is headed by the
outrageously theatrical ex-actress, Judith. Each member of this
self-absorbed family of four has independently invited a guest for the
weekend. Unfortunately for the guests, they are thoroughly bemused by their
hosts’ casual ill-manners.
In typical Coward fashion, a sly dig
is taken at upper-class English society in the 1920s. Coward himself said
that “ Hay Fever” is considered by many to be his best comedy – clever,
very funny and an assured crowd-pleaser.
“Hay Fever” is directed by Alastair
Duff for the Fish Hoek Dramatic Society.

Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” at the Masque
William Shakespeare’s text has the extraordinary ability to travel through time and space and retain its relevance. The issues it deals with are every bit as real in the 21st century as they were in the 11th.. Tyranny and fascism still raise their heads in varying forms in our modern world.
“Macbeth” is a tale of lies, manipulation and treachery. Britain, at war with itself, sees the rise of a would-be fascist dictator, driven by his manipulative wife. Wicked spells and treachery are the order of the day as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth seize their chance to rule.
A feast of poetry and prose by the Bard of Stratford, Shakespeare’s play is as pertinent now as it was when it was first written.
This production of “Macbeth” is set to a rousing soundscape and rich lighting with stage design by Vivienne Gray.
Directed by Clifford Graham (who also plays Macbeth) and co-directed by Brenda Gray,
“Macbeth” opens at the Masque Theatre on Friday 1 and runs until Saturday 9 July (excluding Sunday to Wednesday). Week nights are at 8pm and Saturdays at 2.30 and 6.30pm. Ticket prices for matinees and Thursday evenings are R50 other evenings R60 (Masque Theatre Club Members enjoy a R10 discount). To book phone 021 788 1898 (o/h)

Agatha Christie’s fine mystery novel “The
Murder of Roger Ackroyd” was adapted for the stage by Michael Morton under
the title “Alibi”. Cecil Jakins directs this play for the Fish Hoek Dramatic
Society. It opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 13 May – an
appropriately sinister date for a murder mystery?
The cast of "Alibi" opening at the Masque Theatre on Friday 13 May
“The Murder of Roger Ackroyd “ was the first of Agatha Christie’s novels to be staged and the play follows the book closely. “Alibi” (with a cast of 12) is full of the usual Christie red-herrings, plot twists and well-defined characters.
It was first produced on the London stage in 1928 with Hercule Poirot played by Charles Laughton, who went on to star in and direct the 1932 Broadway production.
“Alibi” runs at the
Masque Theatre, Muizenberg from Friday 13 to Saturday 21 May (excluding
Sunday to Wednesday).

Arthur Miller Classic at the Masque. Throughout the ages authoritarian leaders have demonised their opposition in order to retain power. The McCarthy hearings in the 50s is one example and even today this continues to happen in Africa. Arthur Miller's The Crucible tells the horrifying story of a group of religious bigots in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, who also demonised their opponents by using the villagers' fear of the Devil and damnation to achieve their own ends.

Neil Simon's comedy at Masque Theatre Director Celia Musikanth has enjoyed an on-going love affair with Neil Simon's comedies about dysfunctional families for years. In fact, this is her fifth Simon production.
One of America's favourite playwrights, Neil Simon, has been relieving audience of their anxieties, fears and worries by making them laugh at the own foibles for over forty years. His portrayals of individual angst and dysfunctional family relationships manage to hit a nerve every time. Simon takes the audience through laughter to tears and back, as he explores life's emotional truths. A prolific writer, he has written and had produced more Broadway hits than any other American playwright. Successful Jewish businessman Joe Benjamin is a modern-day “Job” with a high-maintenance wife, indulged children and wise-cracking household help. Just when it seems things couldn't get any worse, he is visited by Sidney Lipton aka The Messenger from God (and a compulsive film buff) with a mission; test Joe's faith and report back to “the Boss”. The jokes and Tests of Faith fly fast and furious as Simon spins a contemporary morality take like no other in this hilarious comedy. “God's Favorite” by
Neil Simon runs from Friday 22 October to Saturday 30 October (excluding
Monday to Wednesday) Please note a special performance on Sunday 24
October at 3pm.
What the Butler Saw.
"What the Butler Saw" This wickedly funny farce is directed by Ralph Yarrow, former head of drama at the University of East Anglia in the UK. Yarrow has directed, acted and given workshops in the UK, India and South Africa and his repertoire ranges from Shakespeare, Goethe and Mdiere, to Beckett and Pinter. Muizenberg Dramatic Society (MADS) is fortunate in having this esteemed director sharing his years of experience with his cast. This fast-and-furious farce is set in a mental home about to be subjected to a government inspection and a police inquiry into missing parts of a statue of Winston Churchill. Cover-ups, revelations, cross-dressings and pursuits succeed one another at breakneck speed. The very young and the very old might find some of this difficult. 'What the Butler Saw'
