Favourite Hits for the Masque - “From Frank and Elvis with Love”
On Sunday 29 August at 3pm (for one show only) singers Aubrey Hindle and Charlie Human with pianist John Aron will present “From Frank and Elvis with Love” which, as implied, comprises some of Sinatra and Presley’s greatest hits.
l-r Charlie Human, John Aron and Aubrey Hindle in "From Frank and Elvis with Love" Aubrey has appeared in numerous concerts, revues and musicals and has always been a popular singer at the Masque as well as a great fan of Frank Sinatra. Charlie, on the other hand, has been singing Elvis’ songs for many years around South Africa. He says he is an interpreter of the songs without being an impersonator! His voice however is totally reminiscent of the King.
This entertaining show also features the South African Circle of Dance Academy’s Danielle Matthews and Jesse Randelhoff. These champion dancers were runners-up at the Vodacom, Ackermans, Western Province and South African Championships. In addition to this in 2007, Danielle was the runner up and in 2008 Jesse was placed third in the World Championships in Holland!
Included in the nostalgic repertoire are such favourites as “Strangers in the Night”, “Lady is a Tramp”, “New York, New York”, Are you Lonesome Tonight”, “Treat me Nice”, “Good Luck Charm” and much, much more!

Clever Adaptation of Beloved Classic at the
Masque.
The spirited Elizabeth Bennet is not in a hurry to marry; however, with four
sisters and an over-zealous, match-making mother, it's difficult to escape
the social pressures of the period. When the proud and wealthy Mr Darcy
arrives on the scene, Elizabeth is determined not to let her feelings
triumph over her good sense. In a society where subtle snobbery and deceit
proliferate, will it be possible for Elizabeth and Darcy to look beyond his
pride and her prejudice to make a thoroughly fulfilling match?“

"Romantic Comedy" at Masque Theatre Bernard Slade's light-hearted play entitled “Romantic Comedy” opens on Friday 14 May at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg.
opening at the Masque Theatre on Friday 14 May. Slade's talent for creating character is particularly pointed in this play. Arrogant and sharp-tongued Jason Carmichael, a successful author of Broadway romantic comedies, is facing two momentous events – marriage and the retirement of his collaborator. Role-players in his real life are: a wealthy socialite, a mousy school-teacher, a motherly agent, a Hollywood actress and a newspaper reporter. Although Carmichael writes successful romantic comedies for Broadway, because of his self-centred nature, he is unable to write a script for his own life. Wendy Goddard directs this confection about love, friendship and theatrical trauma for the Constantiaberg Theatre Players. “Romantic Comedy”
runs from Friday 14 to Saturday 22 May (excluding Sunday to Wednesday).
Weekdays at 20h00 and Saturdays at 14h30 and 18h30.
Albert Combrink presents "Sweeter than Roses" at the Masque. After rave reactions by The Linbergh Arts Foundation Concert audiences, this delightful programme comes to the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg for one show only. The programme of mostly English songs explores the joys and dreams of young lovers through the songs of Purcell (“If music be the food of love”), Britten’s famous Folksong settings (“The foggy, foggy dew”) and operatic extracts by Mozart, that master of comic characterisation. The three singers are all noted for their variety and can perform in different styles. Shirley Sutherland will lead the second half of the programme with extracts from “My Fair Lady”, the show in which she had a major triumph at the Artscape Theatre in 2008.

A very strong cast is directed by award-winning Sue Bolton of the Claremont Dramatic Society. Neil Simon's

tutus dancing in the moonlight with a poet, to the romantic strains of
Chopin's music. Laura Bosenberg, Angela Hansford, Megan Swart, Janine

technically-challenging solos, while Robin van Wyk and Thomas Thorne will
dance the role of the Poet. “A
Connoisseur's Delight” is a selection of excerpts and pas de deux from
several ballets, including “La Bayadere”, “Don Quixote” and “Flower
Festival”. Also to be seen is “Meditation”, the solo written by David Poole
for Ann Wixley in 1988, in homage to one of the greatest ballerinas of the
20th
century, Anna Pavlova, and danced on this occasion by Lauren Rogers. This
programme is sure to please all ballet followers and send them home asking
for more.

Vintage Christie at the Masque A character in the play expounds a theory of murder that the audience can only assume is the playwright's own. Murders, he says, begin long before they are actually perpetrated and advance step by step toward that “zero hour”.
Neville Strange has invited both his first and second wife to spend the summer holidays at the home of his former guardian. A murder takes place.... Now Christie's trademark twists and turns come into play with the audience attempting to sort out the culprits from the red herrings. Trying to figure out "whodunnit" in a Christie mystery is like trying to get out of a maze when the walls keep moving. Jane Philbrick directs “Towards Zero” for the Fish Hoek Dramatic Society. It runs on Friday 05,
Saturday 06, Wednesday 10, Thursday 11, Friday 12 and Saturday 13 March.
Weeknights are at 20h00 and Saturdays at 14h30 and 18h30.

Masque
This zany comedy looks at the fears, longings and literary aspirations of a dysfunctional writers' circle. Ayckbourn turns the serious business of writing on its head with a gentle but fun-filled poke at a number of contrasting literary genres. With a clap of thunder, he plunges these would-be authors into a crazy world of their own unfulfilled aspirations – complete with goblins, detectives, Victorian ladies and aliens. Alan Ayckbourn's “Improbable Fiction”,
with a talented cast of seven, runs from:

Tom Byrne is a three-time winner of the Aloha Performing Arts Centre Original Playwriting Contest in Hawaii. For the last eight years he has lived in Cape Town and is becoming a familiar face on the Masque stage. The play is set in the kitchen of Lily Delorio in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, one very hot afternoon, and evening in 1973. Louie Delorio (Lily's son) is in prison for bigamy, eleven or twelve counts of bigamy, depending on whether you count the Gravecci twins as one or two. Having run away from a work-release program, Louie arrives at his mother's door. The surprise kills her. He is forced to put her in the chest freezer and wear her wig and clothes to entertain her friends for the evening. Things go down hill from there. Spooks at the Masque? The enigma of the supernatural has always fascinated human beings. When Shirley Jackson's novel “The Haunting of Hill House” was published in 1959, it was an immediate success. It has been filmed twice and adapted for the stage by F. Andrew Leslie. (It is a co-incidence that both the novel and the Masque Theatre turn 50 this year.)
The play “The Haunting of Hill House” opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 18 September, directed by Angela Lee-Wright for the Fish Hoek Dramatic Society. It is a mystifying story in which a group of people spends a summer in the reputedly haunted Hill House. The main character of this chilling play is, in fact, the house itself. Director Angela Lee-Wright has been intrigued by Shirley Jackson's classic horror novel for years and is eager to share her fascination with Masque audiences. Shows are from 18 to 25 September (excluding Sunday to Wednesday). Week nights are at 20:00 and Saturdays are at 14:30 and 18:30. Tickets are R55 and R45 for matinees and Thursday evenings. Masque Theatre Club members enjoy a R10 discount. To book phone 021 788 1898 (09:00 to 16:00 during the week and 08:30 to 11:30 on Saturdays).

Agatha Strikes Again!
This particular “Christie” has a very clever plot, is set in exotic locations, such as Jerusalem and Petra, and features some excellent character parts. After the usual murder and a number of twists and red herrings, a very “different” ending provides us with a most unusual denouement.

“Time of my Life” is probably one of Alan Ayckbourn’s funniest and wittiest comedies. It opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday 15 May 2009.
On Laura Stratton’s 55th birthday her husband Gerry organises a small family dinner at their favourite Italian restaurant. While the venue remains the same, the action moves ingeniously backwards and forwards in time. Skeletons from the past, present and future are revealed. The play combines a mixture of comedy and pathos – which, of course, is Ayckbourn’s forte.

It is a colourful programme of Beatles’ songs and snapshot moments that depict the group’s meteoric rise to fame from humble beginnings to their eventual break-up in 1970. “All you need is love” is not a look-alike, sound-alike tribute show, but audiences can expect humour, fun and show-stopping Beatles’ songs. The show is supported by a live band.
Devised by Coleen van Staden and co-directed by Celia Musikanth, with musical direction by Ted Faulkner and Elmarie Lith and choreography by Trish Notcutt and Allison Blair for MADS, “All you need is love” opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg on Friday 24 April and runs until Saturday 02 May.

"Flamenco: Fire and Grace" at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg
Saudiq Khan, renowned flamenco guitar maestro from Cape Town, leads the ensemble of Robert Davids (cajon and percussion) and Andre Webb (bass guitar) and highly acclaimed flamenco dancer Maria Cortes, in his a new show “Flamenco: Fire and Grace” live at the Masque Theatre from 28-31 January 2009. Passion and beauty abound in a show full of cutting rhythms and stunning dancing. These Cape Town based performers, have dedicated many years to the art of Flamenco and the show promises to captivate the audience with shouts of “Ole” , gunshot footwork of flamenco dancing, and invigorating rhythms with a dash of jazz, latin and original work.Sadiq Khan
Most of the compositions are original works by Khan, drawn from his experiences over the years in Spain as well as his home town Cape Town, South Africa. Saudiq Khan captures the spirit of Flamenco and shows off his technique on the acoustic guitar like no other . His fingers move at such speed that they appear not to be moving at all. His dedication to the instrument shows what hard work can do and audiences will be impressed by the ease between the rhythmic fluctuations of the music played.
Part of the set pays tribute to the legends of flamenco, while other compositions capture spontaneous moments in the spirit of flamenco puro with fusion that relates to Cape Town . True to what audiences have come to expect from this fiery flamenco trio, “Flamenco: Fire and Grace” promises to deliver a highly entertaining and invigorating evening of pure Flamenco and Latin-jazz fusion.

MASQUE THEATRE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS In the early 1950s Mr Herbert L. Stern, a lawyer, had a vision: to breathe new life into Muizenberg with a theatre for all. "Bertie"Stern’s beloved Masque Theatre opened its door on 10 January 1959 – exactly 50 years ago. An admirable choice for this special anniversary is Sir David Hare’s ‘The Breath of Life’ which was written especially for Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith and earned rave reviews when it opened in the West End, London, in 2002. Claremont Dramatic Society is known for the excellent calibre of its productions; ‘The Breath of Life’ is a well-chosen vehicle for another success. Award-winning director Sue Bolton has hand-picked Yvonne Copley and Su Cunningham to play the demanding roles of Madeleine and Frances. These two woman are widely disparate characters – Frances is a successful women’s novelist, while Madeleine is a retired museum curator living a solitary life on the Isle of Wight. There is, however, a link between them which gradually surfaces. The set and lighting are designed by award winners David Davidson and Gary Fargher, respectively. ‘The Breath of Life’ by Sir David Hare opens on Friday 09 January and runs until Saturday 17 January 2009 (excluding Sunday to Wednesday). Saturday 10 January 2009 will be a special
Birthday Gala performance with a cocktail party
afterwards. For this occasion, ticket prices are R75 – Masque Theatre Club
members pay R65. This show starts at 18:15. Ticket prices are R55 for evenings and R45 for Thursday night and matinees (Masque Theatre Club members get R10 discount). To book phone Masque Theatre Bookings 021 788
